Job Summary

This is a full-time position based out of Roseburg, OR. This position will perform fish and habitat surveys in streams and rivers throughout Oregon.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys and assist in the implementation of the statewide inventory project.
  • Provide quantitative assessments of habitat in streams and standing waters.
  • Gather information on fish species composition, distribution, and abundance.
  • Conduct spawning ground surveys by locating, driving to, and walking or using a non-motorized boat in selected stream reaches.
  • Obtain gender, length, and biological samples from spawned or dead salmon.
  • Describe channel morphology and instream habitat characteristics.
  • Conduct in-stream flow studies to determine necessary flows for fish.
  • Accurately transcribe field data to appropriate data forms.
  • Complete map work, verify data, and label photos in the office.
  • Locate sites with a map, compass, and GPS.
  • Communicate with landowners to obtain permission to conduct surveys.
  • Organize and mount scale samples for reading.
  • Hike into and along streams daily.
  • Work in various weather conditions and over rough terrain.
  • Occasionally camp or backpack in remote areas.

Requirements

  • Flexible work schedule that varies in hours worked daily.
  • Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval.
