Job Summary

A Public Works Inspector I ensures that contractors comply with specifications, standards and codes for minor public construction projects by performing on-site inspections on highway, street, bridge, water and wastewater systems facilities, conduits or other minor construction projects. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek, but may be required to work evening, weekend and holiday hours on a 24-hour on-call basis. Work is performed outdoors where incumbents are exposed to construction sites, inclement weather, dust, noise and traffic. Some positions require working in confined spaces with high voltage cables. Work requires minimal physical exertion; however, there may be periods of prolonged standing or walking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures compliance with specifications, standards, and codes for minor public construction projects.
  • Performs on-site inspections on various facilities and construction projects.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Three years of experience in performing construction inspection work or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or equivalent.
